Overview
As a Drinking Water biased Principal Engineer, you will lead high-quality discipline design delivery within Galliford Try’s Engineering Design Team, ensuring compliance with BMS, CDM and HSE regulations. You’ll provide technical direction on complex water and wastewater designs, mentor junior staff, and govern design outputs across projects. The role blends hands-on technical work with team leadership and knowledge sharing, within a proactive, agile environment.

Responsibilities
- Ensure technical compliance and excellence on projects; act as the default approver for design outputs
- Provide technical direction to deliver efficient, buildable designs balancing capital and operating costs
- Support CDM compliance as Principal Designer Lead where required
- Ensure design for buildability, safe construction and operation
- Maintain procedural governance and client/spec/standards compliance
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate design with other disciplines
- Lead technical problem solving across the project lifecycle and manage risk and opportunities
- Line manage multi-disciplinary Senior Design Engineers and mentor staff toward professional accreditation (e.g. IChemE)
Key requirements
- Degree in Engineering (or equivalent)
- Chartered member of a recognised engineering body (preferred)
- Expert in water engineering design and multi-disciplinary checks
- Proven ability to check and approve discipline design packages
- Strong liaison with clients and supply chain
- Experience with HSE and British Standards application in designs
- HAZOP leadership preferable; DSEAR experience preferable
