Overview
As a Process engineer within Assystem’s Fusion and Modular Nuclear Business Unit, you will support the design of complex thermal and fluid systems for the SMR project. You’ll contribute analytical and calculation methods to demonstrate system performance and help establish a centre of excellence for analysis. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate requirements into robust PFDs, P&IDs, layouts and sizing calculations, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. This role offers hands-on impact in integrating Turbine Island designs within a broader nuclear plant and shaping innovative, safe solutions for next‑generation reactors.

Responsibilities
- Ensure supplier deliverables meet requirements and challenge designs when needed
- Create and review Process Flow Diagrams, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, Layout Drawings, component sizing calculations, and specifications
- Conduct and review option studies and design documents
- Develop and review functional and design requirements in systems engineering
- Integrate Turbine Island design into the overall power plant
- Serve as the go-to expert for Turbine Island interfaces and stakeholder activities
- Support design reviews, HAZID/HAZOP studies, and adherence to health and safety policies
- Collaborate with safety teams on nuclear safety licensing and environmental permitting
Key requirements
- Experience in nuclear or regulated industries such as thermal power, oil and gas
- Knowledge of steam turbines, condensers, feedwater heaters, pumps, and piping systems
- Experience from FEED to detailed design and EPC delivery
- Procurement experience and ability to develop procurement specifications and liaise with suppliers
- Excellent communication with internal and external stakeholders
- Familiarity with UK Health and Safety regulations, safety systems, and HAZOP
- Understanding of ASME, European, and UK standards
- Systems engineering experience or awareness (desirable)
