Overview

As a Design Manager, you will lead the design process for major London construction projects, coordinating internal and external design teams from concept to construction issue. You’ll apply commercial, contractual, and technical expertise to drive design quality, value engineering, and timely delivery. The role sits within a high-performing team delivering complex, high-value schemes and involves close collaboration with clients, contractors, and suppliers. You’ll impact project risk, safety through design, and BIM adoption.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the end-to-end design process using commercial, contractual, programme and technical expertise
  • Plan and monitor the Design Information Release Schedule, Design Programme and Design Responsibility Matrix
  • Coordinate external consultant and sub-contractor design teams
  • Lead design team meetings and coordination workshops
  • Support tender assessments and value engineering
  • Develop and implement drawing and document control systems
  • Review design information for quality, safety/CDM compliance, and Employer’s Requirements
  • Assist Project Manager and Project QS with scope changes and variations
  • Manage site RFI process and register
  • Engage with clients, contractors, subcontractors, and authorities to build relationships
  • Ensure design information aligns with project timelines and quality standards
  • Identify and mitigate health, safety, and financial risks in design and construction
  • Support site SHEQ, traffic management and fire plans where required
  • Support BIM standards development and implementation on applicable projects
  • Conduct on-site quality inspections and report issues

Key requirements

  • Relevant design or construction-related qualification
  • Proven Design Manager experience in construction
  • Strong leadership with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good understanding of construction processes and buildability
  • Desirable: Experience with MS Office suite
  • Desirable: Document control experience
  • Desirable: Experience with Viewpoint or equivalent platform
  • Desirable: Knowledge of BIM processes and software
