Staff Software Engineer – Global KYC and Onboarding

Overview

As Staff Backend Engineer at Wise, you will shape the architecture of the verification platform and guide technical direction across the KYC/Onboarding squad. You’ll build and scale high-performance services, mentor engineers, and partner with product teams to improve speed, accuracy, and user experience. This role focuses on a configuration-driven KYC platform, advancing automation and reliability in a complex regulatory space. You’ll contribute to a culture of ownership, data-driven decisions, and cross-functional collaboration, with a clear impact on customers worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain scalable backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and cloud tech
• Lead initiatives to enhance automation, reliability, and performance of verification systems
• Collaborate with product managers to translate requirements into technical solutions
• Mentor junior engineers and provide code reviews
• Drive architectural decisions and technical strategy for verification systems
• Develop internal tools to assist verification agents
• Contribute to engineering culture through knowledge sharing and best practices

Key requirements

• 10+ years of Java 8+ experience with Spring
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases
• Strong system design skills for distributed, high-throughput services
• Track record leading technical initiatives and mentoring engineers
• Solid understanding of security best practices and data protection
• Excellent problem-solving and attention to detail
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences
• Experience with financial or KYC verification systems is a plus
