Principal Electrical Design Engineer

Overview

As a Principal Design Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of complex building services projects across diverse sectors. You will manage multidisciplinary teams, oversee technical design, and build strong client relationships to drive high-quality outcomes. You will provide technical leadership in HVAC, public health, electrical, and related disciplines while ensuring regulatory compliance and sustainability targets. This role blends strategic oversight with hands-on delivery, shaping projects from concept through completion. You will work closely with architects, contractors, and stakeholders to advance low-carbon, net-zero initiatives within a dynamic consultancy environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and delivery of building services projects from concept to completion
• Manage multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with architects, contractors, and stakeholders
• Produce and review calculations, specifications, reports, and drawings
• Provide technical leadership across HVAC, public health, electrical, and mechanical disciplines
• Ensure compliance with UK regulations and industry standards
• Attend client meetings and act as technical lead throughout projects
• Support business development including proposals, presentations, and bids
• Manage resources, budgets, and programme delivery
• Mentor junior engineers
• Contribute to sustainability projects and net-zero initiatives

Key requirements

• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or related
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or actively pursuing Chartership
• Extensive building services design experience in a consultancy
• Strong knowledge of UK building regulations and standards
• Proven experience leading projects and managing client relationships
• Proficiency with Amtech, Dialux, Relux, IES, Hevacomp, Revit, AutoCAD or similar
• Excellent communication and leadership skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
