Overview

As Principal Consultant in Regulatory Advice, you lead high-impact regulatory engagements for clients in regulated sectors, delivering strategic, economic, and governance guidance on frameworks, price controls, and performance commitments. You’ll manage engagement quality, stakeholders, and mentor junior staff while contributing to growth through proposals and thought leadership. You collaborate with Client Service and Technical Directors to shape programmes and outputs. This role offers UK-wide client exposure, career progression, and meaningful impact in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee regulatory advisory engagements with senior stakeholders
  • Ensure quality assurance and governance across projects
  • Mentor and develop less experienced team members
  • Support business growth through proposals, thought leadership, and account development
  • Contribute to programme design, delivery of projects, and technical outputs with Client Service and Technical Directors
  • Collaborate with clients across the UK and manage multi-stakeholder environments
  • Maintain strong stakeholder relationships and deliver timely, evidence-led recommendations
  • Plan resources, manage risks, and ensure delivery against deadlines

Key requirements

  • Senior regulatory experience in water/energy sectors
  • Experience with Price Review/revenue-setting processes (AMP cycles, multi-year determinations)
  • Knowledge of assurance standards and approaches (three lines of defence, ISAE 3000)
  • Strong understanding of regulation policy and strategy
  • Knowledge of cost modelling, benchmarking, or business case appraisal
  • Track record of winning work (proposal writing, networking)
  • Excellent written communication for regulator/board audiences
  • Strong stakeholder management with credibility at senior levels
  • Proven project leadership and delivery, including planning and risk management
  • High analytical capability in interpreting financial/performance data
  • Experience developing and mentoring colleagues
