Overview
In this role you will provide authoritative process design leadership for water and wastewater projects, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient treatment solutions. You will work with multidisciplinary teams and clients to translate briefs into robust design through concept to detail, while upholding governance and quality. You’ll influence project bids, risk management and whole-life cost efficiency, contributing to a culture of safety and continuous improvement. This is an opportunity to shape treatment processes at scale within the UK water sector and deliver meaningful environmental and operational outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and delivery of complex process engineering solutions for water and wastewater projects.
- Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Develop innovative, practical and risk-balanced treatment process solutions.
- Ensure designs are safe, sustainable, compliant and operationally efficient.
- Produce and review process calculations, mass balances, PFDs, P&IDs, technical reports and design documentation.
- Optimise treatment processes for regulatory compliance, operational performance and life-cycle cost efficiency.
- Support major project bids and contribute to delivery strategies.
- Act as a technical reviewer and maintain high standards of governance and quality assurance.
- Manage technical delivery from broad briefs, balancing programme, cost, quality and resources.
- Identify and manage technical risks and address issues proactively.
- Collaborate with clients, regulators, operational teams, contractors and suppliers to achieve project outcomes.
- Mentor and develop engineers, fostering technical capability across the business.
- Promote continuous improvement, innovation, safety and customer focus.
Key requirements
- Degree-qualified in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related discipline.
- Significant experience delivering process engineering solutions in the UK water and wastewater sector.
- Strong understanding of water and sewage treatment principles, technologies and operations.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary design projects.
- Ability to develop innovative, cost-effective treatment solutions meeting client and regulatory requirements.
- Experience producing and reviewing process calculations, hydraulic assessments, PFDs and technical specifications.
- Good understanding of civil, mechanical, electrical and ICA engineering.
- Strong technical judgement and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting quality and programme commitments.
