Location: Swinton, Manchester — hybrid, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the office
Permanent
We’re hiring a Senior Software Engineer for a UK technology business building IoT monitoring and data platforms used by major organisations across healthcare, food, energy and industrial environments.
You’ll join a development team of around 5–6 people, helping build and scale a recently launched data and automation platform. The work is predominantly greenfield, with significant scope to influence architecture, own technical decisions and shape engineering standards.
The role
You’ll work across a TypeScript stack, with a strong backend focus, developing systems that turn high volumes of real-time data into useful insights, alerts and automated workflows.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Building platform capabilities using TypeScript, Node.js and React/Next.js.
- Designing and operating reliable HTTP APIs.
- Developing high-volume, time-series data ingestion, including processing, storage and retention.
- Designing MongoDB schemas, indexes and aggregation pipelines, and improving query performance.
- Using Redis for caching, queueing or rate limiting.
- Contributing to architecture, technical documentation and engineering standards.
- Owning features through development, testing, deployment and production support.
- Supporting the existing platform as the business transitions to its next-generation product.
- Diagnosing production incidents and participating in an on-call rota.
What we’re looking for
- Substantial commercial TypeScript experience across backend and frontend development.
- Strong Node.js experience, including designing and maintaining production APIs.
- Experience with high-volume, real-time or event-driven systems.
- Experience working with large datasets, ideally 100 million+ datapoints.
- Practical MongoDB experience covering schema design, indexing, aggregation and performance troubleshooting.
- Commercial experience with Redis.
- Evidence of owning production systems, including reliability, monitoring and incident resolution.
- Confidence making technical decisions and explaining trade-offs within a small team.
Experience with IoT, telemetry, time-series systems or LoRaWAN would be advantageous.
Technology
What’s on offer
- Salary up to £80,000, depending on experience.
- Bonus and equity.
- Predominantly greenfield development with meaningful technical ownership.
