Job Description:

The Ulster County Family Court Domestic Violence Advocate helps survivors navigate the family law legal system. They provide crisis intervention, safety planning, paperwork assistance for family offense petitions, violations of temporary orders of protection, modifications of temporary orders of protection, address confidentiality request, and financial affidavit form. This position reports to the program director of the program and the chief and deputy chief clerks of the court.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Court navigation: assistance with drafting and submitting legal petitions, and explain family court rules, legal options, and case expectations to survivors.
  • Crisis Intervention: offer immediate emotional support, risk assessment, and trauma-informed counseling.
  • Safety Planning: create personalized safety strategies for clients and their children.
  • Resource Navigation: connect clients to community services like emergency housing, local shelters, financial assistance, public benefits, and much more.
  • Case Management: maintain confidential case records and track service metrics for agency grants.
  • Support: provide court accompaniment when feasible.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License.
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, criminal justice, psychology, or equivalent direct advocacy experience. Minimum of one year.
  • Understanding of domestic violence dynamics and family court laws.
  • Strong active listening, crisis de-escalation, and cultural competency.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish-English preferred).
  • Prior victim advocacy experience.

  • Accurately enter and/or retrieve information from various computer systems and/or programs in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Organize, prioritize and problem solve in a multitask environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with families, community resources, local and state law enforcement, other agencies, superiors, and peers.
  • Type quickly/accurately while victim is speaking

Hours and Pay Rate

This is a part-time, 20.5-hours per week position based at primarily at the Ulster County Family Court on Ulster Ave. in Kingston.

The rate of pay for this position is: $18.85 per hour. Schedule is Monday and Friday, 9am-5pm and Wednesday 1:30-5pm.
