Senior Controls Engineer

Overview

In this role, you will lead the design and delivery of Building Management Systems with a strong emphasis on HVAC and controls for Arup’s Building Performance and Systems team. You’ll contribute to projects across new builds, refurbishments and post-occupancy work, helping optimise performance, reduce costs and support occupant wellbeing. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams and clients to shape resilient, efficient building operations and share knowledge through mentoring. This position offers meaningful, socially useful work aligned with Arup’s mission and multi-market expertise.

Responsibilities

• Lead BMS/Controls design and delivery across projects (HVAC-focused)
• Provide design leadership for BMS systems in concept through construction stages
• Support Buildings in Use aspects and post-occupancy activities
• Liaise confidently with clients and project teams to define requirements and ensure delivery
• Mentor and train less experienced engineers and foster team collaboration
• Contribute to commercial and delivery aspects of BMS projects
• Engage in safety compliance and site work as required
• Collaborate with Buildings and Infrastructure colleagues to develop opportunities

Key requirements

• Degree-qualified engineer or demonstrable equivalent experience in BMS industry
• Solid experience leading BMS/Controls projects
• Strong communication, report writing and stakeholder management skills
• Experience managing BMS projects (people, time, budget) and commercial focus
• Integrator and collaborator with ability to work across teams
• Interest in Buildings in Use, Energy Management and health and wellbeing in operational buildings
• Willingness to travel or work on project sites in the UK and overseas
• Mentoring mindset and ability to train junior engineers
