Overview

In this role you will strengthen Serco’s financial control environment across a complex, international organisation. You will lead governance enhancements, consolidating audit, assurance, compliance and operational indicators to provide a single view of control effectiveness for senior leadership and the Board. You will drive continuous improvement and cross-functional collaboration to simplify processes and bolster accountability. This is a high-visibility role that shapes financial control strategy and outcomes at scale, with a focus on practical, sustainable solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and enhancement of the Group financial control governance framework.
  • Coordinate Group-wide compliance and control activities across divisions and functions.
  • Integrate audit findings, control testing, compliance reporting and operational indicators into a single view of effectiveness and risk.
  • Identify emerging risks and weaknesses, ensuring proper escalation and remediation.
  • Translate governance and technical control information into clear actions and ownership.
  • Support senior leaders, Audit Committee and Board with insight-led reporting on performance and risk.
  • Partner with assurance providers to prioritise assurance activities by risk and materiality.
  • Drive continuous improvement to simplify processes and strengthen governance.

Key requirements

  • Significant experience in Financial Controls, Internal Audit, Assurance, Risk or Governance in a large, complex organisation.
  • Strong understanding of financial control frameworks, governance structures and regulatory environments.
  • Experience in a Big 4 firm and/or sizeable corporate environment with senior-level influence.
  • Proven ability to lead change across a matrix organisation.
  • Ability to translate multiple information sources into meaningful risk insight.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management with gravitas to challenge senior leaders.
  • Effective communication with diverse audiences, from operators to executive leadership and Audit Committee.
  • Strong commercial judgement balancing detail with control effectiveness.
  • Experience with finance transformation, controls improvement or governance enhancement programmes (advantageous).
  • Professional accountancy qualification desirable (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent); additional IA/ Risk/ Controls qualifications advantageous.
