Overview

In this role you will shape The New Yorker’s web and app experiences, including games and related reader journeys. You’ll bridge editorial identity with intuitive interfaces, crafting delightful interactions and clear flows. You’ll work with cross-functional partners to progress initiatives from discovery through launch and iteration. You’ll explore AI-enabled design, prototyping, and close collaboration with engineers to deliver notable, reusable experiences that encourage readers and players to return.

Responsibilities

  • Design games and surrounding experiences, focusing on discovery, onboarding, progress, and return engagement
  • Translate editorial brand identity into clear UI, typography, layout and accessible interactions
  • Create prototypes to test behavior, motion, timing, and feedback across reading and gameplay journeys
  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, researchers and editors to refine requirements and feasibility
  • Utilize research, analytics and usability testing to inform decisions and iterate
  • Contribute to design systems, patterns and tokens for consistency across platforms
  • Engage with AI tools to enhance design practice and prototype ideas
  • Partner with teams to measure outcomes (engagement, retention) and drive improvements

Key requirements

  • 5+ years in product or interaction design or equivalent portfolio
  • Strong visual and interaction design skills with attention to typography and details
  • Proficient in Figma and interactive prototyping
  • Experience with design systems, tokens and constraints
  • Familiarity with AI tools in design practice and willingness to expand
  • Ability to use research and data to inform decisions and present a clear design point of view
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with product, engineering and editorial partners
  • Ownership mindset with ability to align with broader team priorities
