Scala Engineer

Overview

In this Core level role, you contribute specialist software craftsmanship to build scalable Scala-based microservices for ITVX. You work within a cross-functional team across User and Payments domains to deliver robust features and maintain production services. You’ll own feature slices end-to-end, emphasize testing, and collaborate to balance pragmatic solutions with delivery speed. The role blends hands-on coding, code reviews, and active participation in the Scala/Backend community to raise engineering standards.

Responsibilities

• Produce high-quality, well-tested Scala code and ensure comprehensive unit/integration tests
• Participate in peer reviews and PRs to uphold standards and catch defects
• Drive the journey from requirements to design to production-ready implementation
• Collaborate with FE, Product, Agile Delivery Managers, and designers to define pragmatic solutions
• Mentor juniors and apprentices to improve skills and knowledge
• Focus on operational health, observability, metrics, and alerting; use feature flags
• Support live services through day-time and on-call rotations

Key requirements

• Confident Scala programming experience (commercial or equivalent)
• Strong automated testing knowledge (unit and integration)
• Proficient with Git and DVCS
• Understanding of functional programming concepts (immutability, referential transparency)
• Web services knowledge (REST, HTTP, JSON)
• Experience with message brokers/event-driven systems (Kafka)
• Experience with payment platforms (Stripe, Google Pay, Apple Pay)
• Authentication standards (OAuth 2.0, JWT)
