Overview
In this role you will help develop high-performance electrical machines and related systems for aerospace propulsion, supporting Rolls-Royce’s mission to pioneer electrification in flight. You will work within a multi-disciplinary team to solve challenging engineering problems, driving design from concept to production while managing technical risk. You’ll perform analyses, create detailed CAD models, and collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, and testing to optimize architectures and packaging. This is a hands-on, impact-driven position at the intersection of mechanical design and electrical propulsion, offering opportunities to shape next-generation aircraft technology.

Responsibilities
- Design and develop high-performance electrical machines, power electronics units, energy storage systems and electromechanical systems for aerospace applications
- Perform structural, thermal, and vibration analyses
- Collaborate with electrical, thermal, systems engineers and stakeholders to optimize motor architecture and packaging
- Lead design through concept to production with suppliers, manufacturing partners, and testing teams
- Navigate design through gated reviews with technical justification and regulatory compliance
- Create detailed 3D CAD models, assembly drawings, and technical reports in line with standards and processes
- Formally manage technical risks to ensure Safe, Reliable and Durable designs
- Drive technical risk reduction via prototyping, material testing and manufacturing trials
- Develop V&V strategy with Validation and Verification Engineers
- Identify and launch technology development activities to address risks
Key requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Engineering or regional equivalent qualification, or equivalent experience
- Experience in cross-functional, collaborative product design
- Strong knowledge of mechanical design methodologies including manufacturing, cost engineering and product definition
- Analytical and innovative problem-solving for technical and business decisions
- Strong technical communication (technical writing, live presenting, CAD)
- Familiarity with Siemens NX and Teamcenter advantageous
- Knowledge of product integrity and aerospace certification frameworks
- Experience with mechanical design, manufacture, service or integration of high-performance electric machines is advantageous
