Hybrid Cloud Engineer

Overview

In this role you will drive the hybrid cloud strategy, focusing on migrating on‑premise services to AWS while maintaining and improving the current hybrid estate. You will work with a collaborative team to implement best practices, automate operations, and translate complex concepts for varied stakeholders. The position sits at the intersection of on‑prem and cloud, enabling secure, resilient infrastructure that supports Guardian’s investigative journalism and digital platforms. This is a hands‑on opportunity to shape a cloud‑first journey in a mission‑driven media organisation.

Responsibilities

• Support, maintain and develop the hybrid infrastructure with emphasis on AWS
• Lead migration of on‑premise services into cloud and maintain existing estate
• Establish and enforce platform standards and best practices
• Collaborate with IT management and other tech teams; present designs and improvements
• Translate complex technical concepts for varied audiences
• Provision and manage AWS components (VMs, storage, networking, managed services)
• Assist with ongoing physical/virtual infrastructure support
• Leverage automation to improve operational efficiency across cloud and on‑premise
• Develop, manage and maintain Infrastructure as Code and automation tooling
• Participate in out‑of‑hours support rota for troubleshooting

Key requirements

• Strong AWS experience in a hybrid infrastructure environment
• Experience with Windows Server environments, VMware platforms and AD‑related identity services
• Understanding of Entra ID and its role in a hybrid identity environment
• Experience supporting infrastructure migration or transformation to cloud platforms
• Solid understanding of infrastructure security, resilience, monitoring and best practices
• Knowledge of network technologies in hybrid cloud/on‑premise environments
• Experience with security hardening (CIS Benchmarks, NIST or equivalent)
• Collaborative mindset; willingness to share knowledge and support colleagues
• Ability to contribute to technical direction and cloud‑first transition
• Availability for out‑of‑hours support on a rotational basis with paid on‑call
