Senior Software Engineer

Overview

In this role you will own significant parts of ASOS FinOps platform, delivering end-to-end data products that reveal Azure cost and usage. You’ll shape cross-team architectural decisions and drive cost visibility, attribution and actionable insights for product delivery teams. You help teams optimise spend through engineering-led solutions, governance, and guardrails. You’ll influence technical direction and collaborate with Finance, Engineering leadership and product teams to make cost-informed architectural choices. This is a mission to empower engineers to see, understand, and act on cloud costs without chasing Finance, enabling faster, smarter decisions.

Responsibilities

• Design and deliver cost-visibility data products (cost/usage pipelines, allocation/showback, anomaly detection, reporting surfaces)
• Own the cost and usage data platform on Databricks (Delta Lake, ingesting Azure Cost Management exports, reservations, metadata)
• Build and own Power BI semantic models (DAX, DirectQuery, XMLA)
• Lead estate optimisation work (right-sizing, autoscaling, storage tiering, data transfer) and quantify impact
• Manage reserved capacity and Savings Plan strategy with Finance
• Develop guardrails for default allocatability (tagging, Azure Policy, budget controls, exception reporting)
• Develop unit economics (cost per order/customer/request) to connect spend to business value
• Engage Product Delivery Teams with architectures and trade-offs to influence future work
• Set technical direction for FinOps engineering (data architecture, modelling standards) and mentor peers
• Support forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis with Finance
• Explore agentic AI in FinOps (GitHub Copilot, Claude) and document learnings
• Write high-quality, tested code with a test-first approach and collaborate with Cyber Security

Key requirements

• Senior software engineering experience
• Experience building data platforms and cost visibility solutions
• Proficiency with Databricks/Delta Lake
• Power BI semantic modeling experience (DAX, DirectQuery, XMLA)
• Experience with Azure Cost Management and Azure services
• Proficiency with Python
• Experience with GitHub/GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps
• Familiarity with AI-assisted tooling (GitHub Copilot, Claude) and a mindset for experimentation
