Clinical Research Fellow in Colorectal Surgery and Innovation (CT1)

This post is for as soon as possible for 11 months.
The post would suit a trainee with a special interest in clinical practice, innovation and research. The trainee will have passed foundation training. This post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for future Core training post.

Main duties of the job
This post is attached to colorectal surgical speciality based within the Colorectal Unit (Ward 46) / Newcastle Centre for Bowel Disease Research Hub. The individual will work primarily on innovation and research projects within the commercial and NIHR research portfolios but may on occasion, based on trainee appetite, supplement the F2/CST tier and as such be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to this level.

Job responsibilities
Clinical:
This post is not recognised for clinical training however, each doctor may be expected, dependent on trainee career focus, to assist in the care of all patients to which he/she is allocated under the direct supervision of the Consultant.
Duties may include business, post-take and teaching ward rounds, OP clinics, Operating Theatre sessions, administrative (dictation of summaries, letters, coding etc.) and
Involvement in surgical assistance as required.
Basic clinical duties under supervision of responsible consultant as required.
Coordination of biopsy retrieval.
Training and involvement in surgery involving biopsies.
The doctor may wish to perform additional on call duties, with permission of the supervising consultant, in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of an appropriate clinical lead.
Administrative:
Coordination of biopsies, involvement in surgery involving biopsies
Clinical case registration in online national registries
Preparation of cases for multidisciplinary meeting presentation (M + M, AWR, IBD MDT meetings etc.).
Research:
This directorate has a strong research pedigree and many ongoing clinical and scientific research projects. The high volume of specialist activity performed in the unit ensures there is a vast opportunity to instigate and perform research/audit projects. Such activity is encouraged and are expected to lead to results presented at regional, national and international meetings.
There will be an expedition to contribute to the successful delivery of ongoing NIHR and commercial projects
Involvement in hands‑on clinical trial recruitment
Insuring appropriate up‑to‑date approvals and trainings to undertake recruitment to clinical trials
Screening of potential participants for upcoming clinical trials
Recruitment and consenting under supervision for clinical trials
Involvement in generating data and data storage.
Preparation of data for analysis, manuscripts and submission for publication.
Presentation of data at local, national and international meetings
Teaching:
The Directorate has a large teaching commitment and strong links with Newcastle University. As such successful applicants may be involved in provision of both formal and informal teaching sessions to Undergraduate Medical Students
Contribution to the programme of teaching for junior doctors
Co‑ordination of unit grand round education sessions.

Flexibility:
In line with the Trusts core value of placing patients at the heart of everything we do, we are developing our service provision to be responsive to the needs of our patients. To meet those needs some staff groups will be increasingly asked to work a more flexible work pattern so that they can offer services in the evening or weekend. As a result any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern or working in the future if required, including evening and weekend work.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
- Primary Medical Qualification
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice at the time of application
- Satisfactory completion of Foundation Training (or equivalent).
- Evidence of smooth progression through training programmes
- Certificate in Clinical Education
- ALS, ALTS, CCrISP
- Certificate in GCP /research competency
- Previous research experience
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
- Good history & examination skills
- Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
- Able to order appropriate investigations
- Image interpretation relevant to practice
- Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
- Previous Paid NHS work experience at the time of application (this does not include Clinical Access / Attachment or Clinical Observership placements).
- Ability to perform basic surgical or vascular access procedures.
Management and Administration Experience
- Ability to run a service and participate in management process.
- Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate to the Trust and its workforce.
- Able to communicate well with patients and colleagues

- Supervising audits undertaken by junior members of the team
- Publication of research in peer reviewed journals and presentation at local, national and international meetings.
