A well-resourced secondary academy in Bristol is seeking a practical, safety-conscious Senior Science Laboratory Technician to oversee laboratory preparation and technical support for an immediate (ASAP) start.

Job Overview

Working directly under the Head of Science, the Senior Science Technician ensures the smooth, safe, and efficient day-to-day operation of all school laboratories. You will prepare scientific equipment, chemical solutions, and biological specimens across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics for Key Stage 3, 4, and 5 practical lessons.

In addition to daily experiment setup, you will manage chemical inventories, maintain laboratory machinery, enforce safety standards, and supervise junior technician staff. This is a full-time, ongoing or permanent position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, assemble, and set up practical apparatus, chemical solutions, and equipment for daily science lessons and exams

  • Monitor chemical stock levels, manage hazardous substance registers, and dispose of waste strictly in line with COSHH and CLEAPSS guidelines

  • Perform routine safety checks and maintenance on laboratory equipment, fume cupboards, and first-aid stations

  • Assist teaching staff during complex practical sessions with technical demonstrations and equipment troubleshooting

  • Maintain accurate safety logs, chemical hazard databases, and equipment repair schedules

  • Line-manage and schedule tasks for assistant laboratory technicians

Candidate Requirements

  • Relevant qualification in Science (A-Level, Higher National Diploma, or BSc in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or related field)
  • Previous laboratory technician experience within a secondary school, college, or commercial laboratory environment
  • Strong working knowledge of CLEAPSS safety standards, COSHH protocols, and chemical handling procedures
  • Excellent organizational skills, high attention to detail, and ability to work to morning practical deadlines
  • An active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
