Job Overview
We are currently seeking an experienced and dedicated Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) to join Child Development Centres across Shropshire and Telford on a locum basis. This is a 6-month opportunity suitable for a Band 6 or Band 7 therapist, with part-time and full-time hours available.
The successful candidate will primarily work within Child Development Centres, supporting the assessment and diagnostic pathway for children and young people with suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
This is an excellent opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapist with experience working with children and young people who have autism and/or complex communication needs. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing specialist Speech and Language Therapy expertise to the assessment and diagnosis process and supporting children and their families throughout their care journey.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist Speech and Language Therapy input within Child Development Centres.
- Contribute to the assessment and diagnostic pathway for children and young people with suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
- Assess children’s speech, language, communication and social communication needs.
- Provide specialist clinical observations and assessments to support multidisciplinary diagnostic decision-making.
- Work collaboratively with paediatricians, psychologists, nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary assessments and case discussions.
- Provide clear clinical documentation and reports in line with professional standards.
- Communicate assessment findings and recommendations appropriately to families and other professionals.
- Support the development of appropriate recommendations and onward referrals where required.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical records.
- Provide a child-centred and family-focused approach throughout the assessment process.
Qualifications and Experience
- A recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent).
- HCPC registration and eligibility for membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
- Experience working with children and young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or complex communication needs.
- Experience within a paediatric or Child Development Centre setting is desirable.
- An understanding of autism assessment and diagnostic pathways.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with children, families and multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong clinical assessment and report-writing skills.
- A proactive, adaptable and reflective approach to professional development.
