Principal Civil Engineer

Overview

As Principal Civil Engineer in WSP’s Liveable Places, you will lead the technical delivery of flagship highways and public realm schemes in London. You’ll shape safer, greener, and more inclusive streets while balancing design leadership, assurance, and mentoring within a multidisciplinary team. You’ll maintain strong client relationships, support framework success, and help grow the team culture. This role combines hands-on delivery with strategic oversight to drive high-quality, sustainable transport outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery of multiple sustainable transport and public realm projects from concept to on-site implementation
• Provide technical leadership and quality assurance across highways, public realm and transport projects
• Coordinate multi-disciplinary design packages (Lighting, Electrical, Hostile Vehicle Mitigation, Structures, Sustainable Drainage Systems)
• Coordinate with the Principal Contractor during design development and provide site supervision support
• Review and approve designs, reports, and technical deliverables from project teams and supply chain
• Ensure compliance with standards, client requirements, and industry best practice
• Mentor and develop junior engineers and graduates
• Support framework opportunities, fee proposals and bid submissions
• Identify opportunities for repeat work and account growth

Key requirements

• Experience delivering public realm, active travel or transport schemes in complex urban environments, particularly in London
• Strong experience in UK highways and public realm detailed design
• Proficiency with MfS, DMRB, TSRGD and LTN guidance
• Passion for design quality and collaborative delivery
• Proven ability to manage project programmes, budgets, cost control and financial reporting across multiple live projects
