Overview

As a Senior/Principal Mechanical Building Services Engineer, you will shape mechanical design solutions for infrastructure and Ministry of Justice facilities, leading delivery on complex projects or providing technical leadership across a portfolio. You’ll work with cross-disciplinary teams, mentor junior engineers, and ensure compliant, high-quality design from survey through handover. This role offers scope to influence secure, public-infrastructure buildings and advance BIM-led delivery in a challenging environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of HVAC, heating, ventilation, cooling, water services, drainage and related systems
  • Prepare and review calculations, specifications, drawings, schedules and reports
  • Develop projects from concept through construction, commissioning and handover
  • Coordinate with electrical, structural, architectural and other disciplines
  • Conduct surveys and assessments of existing facilities
  • Create practical refurbishment, upgrade and new-build solutions
  • Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, standards, and CDM
  • Manage design quality, risks, budgets, and schedules
  • Engage with clients, contractors, suppliers and stakeholders
  • Provide construction-stage support and respond to design queries
  • Mentor engineers and technicians
  • For Principal level: lead teams, approve deliverables, manage resources and contribute to bids

Key requirements

  • Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or related field
  • Significant experience designing mechanical building-services systems
  • Experience in a consultancy or multidisciplinary design environment
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, mechanical plant, water services and controls
  • Experience producing and checking calculations, specifications and design docs
  • Knowledge of Building Regulations, standards and CDM responsibilities
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit and BIM-led delivery
  • Strong client, stakeholder and project-management skills
  • Incorporated or Chartered status, or progress toward professional registration
  • Principal level: Chartered status or equivalent leadership and commercial capability
  • Experience in prisons, courts, government buildings, defence, healthcare, education or other sensitive environments (advantageous)
