Principal Mechanical Engineer

Overview

As Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the mechanical design and delivery of complex projects from concept to completion, acting as the technical authority within the team. You will mentor engineers, oversee designs, and support office growth while collaborating with electrical, sustainability and BIM teams. This role focuses on high‑impact, design‑led schemes across sectors such as offices, healthcare, education and housing, with a strong net‑zero emphasis. You’ll engage with clients and contribute to proposals and resourcing to shape the office’s capability and delivery quality.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design on medium to large‑scale projects
• Oversee and review designs produced by senior and intermediate engineers
• Provide technical guidance, mentorship and quality assurance
• Attend client meetings and represent the business at project level
• Support fee proposals, resourcing and project planning
• Work closely with electrical, sustainability and BIM teams

Key requirements

• Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services
• Chartered or working toward CEng status (CIBSE / IMechE)
• Strong background in UK building services design consultancy
• Proven experience leading projects and managing engineers
• Confident communicator with clients and internal stakeholders
