Project Manager

Overview

As a freelance Project Manager for a leading civils contractor, you will drive the delivery of complex heavy civils and flood defence schemes for Environment Agency projects. You will manage from ECI through construction to completion, coordinating client, designers, subcontractors and site teams. You’ll balance safety, programme, and budget while maintaining stakeholder relationships and ensuring quality and environmental standards. This role offers high-impact delivery with potential future freelance opportunities and exposure to major infrastructure works.

Responsibilities

• Manage projects from ECI/pre-construction through to delivery and completion
• Lead planning, programming and delivery of heavy civils and flood defence works
• Oversee site teams, subcontractors and supply chain partners
• Ensure on‑time, safe delivery within budget and approved costs
• Manage project costs, forecasting and commercial performance
• Coordinate with Environment Agency and other stakeholders
• Oversee design development, constructability and buildability during ECI
• Manage temporary works, construction methodology and risk
• Ensure compliance with specifications, quality and environmental standards
• Lead progress meetings and maintain strong client relationships
• Manage programme, risk, change and project reporting

Key requirements

• Proven experience as a Project Manager in civil engineering
• Strong Environment Agency / flood defence project experience
• Background in heavy civils (earthworks, concrete structures, drainage)
• Experience through ECI / pre-construction stages
• Experience delivering projects for major public-sector or framework clients
• Strong commercial, contractual and programme management skills
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
• Relevant industry qualifications, ideally including SMSTS, TWC, First Aid
