Job overview
This role is at the heart of making a real difference to patient care. The Care Group Support Manager is responsible for leading operational performance, supporting service improvement, managing budgets and resources, and working alongside clinicians, senior nurses, and managers to deliver high-quality, efficient healthcare services. It is a varied and influential role that combines leadership, problem-solving, data-driven decision‑making, and people management to help ensure patients receive the best possible care.

Main duties of the job
The Care Group Support Manager, plays a key role in ensuring clinical services operate effectively. Responsibilities will include:
- Leading operational performance across the Care Group, ensuring services meet quality, activity, performance, and financial targets.
- Managing day-to-day service operations, resolving issues quickly and supporting clinicians and senior leaders to maintain smooth service delivery.
- Monitoring and analysing performance data, identifying risks, trends, and opportunities for improvement, and implementing solutions to achieve targets.
- Working collaboratively with Consultants, Matrons, Clinical Directors, Finance, HR, and Performance teams to develop services and improve patient outcomes.
- Supporting financial management, including budget monitoring, cost improvement programmes, business case development, and ensuring value for money.
- Leading and supporting projects and service improvement initiatives, helping to introduce new ways of working and enhance patient experience.
- Ensuring effective governance and compliance, including contributing to audits, investigations, policy development, and performance management processes.
- Managing and developing staff, overseeing recruitment, attendance management, appraisals, training, and supporting high-performing administrative teams.
- Representing the Care Group at internal and external meetings, building strong relationships with stakeholders and contributing to strategic decision‑making
Working for our organisation
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300, providing inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state‑of‑the‑art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities.
A new Urgent Emergency Care Centre was opened in March 2023. The two-storey development has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity and has provided almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

Qualifications
- Formal education to first degree level or equivalent in Business Management.
- Significant experience working in an NHS operational management role
Experience / Skills
- Significant experience working in an NHS setting in an operational management role
- Evidence of project management experience in the last two years.
- Experience in the processes to support the management/monitoring of waiting lists (PTL’s) to support RTT delivery.
- Experience of working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team including senior Consultants.
- Experience in the development of policies and procedures/business cases.
- Line management experience in the last two years.
- Experience of managing/monitoring budgets in the last two years.
Communication Skills
- Highly motivated and self-directed with the ability to prioritise and work to tight deadlines.
- Able to work under own initiative, independently or as an effective team member
- Management of clinical incidents and complaints.
- Capacity to work with clinicians at all levels, maintaining positive working relationships
- Able to co-ordinate and delegate accordingly within the directorate to effectively utilise resources.
Flexibility
- Resilient, flexible and able to adapt to ensure achievement of objectives with constantly changing situations and environments.
- Highly motivated and self-directed with the ability to prioritise and work to tight deadlines.
Analytical & Judgement
- Ability to review and present data to demonstrate performance and where improvements need to be made.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to consider bigger picture. Able to manage several demanding agendas simultaneously and able to work autonomously.
