About the Role

Engage Education are delighted to be working in partnership with a welcoming mainstream primary school in Leeds who are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Special Needs Teaching Assistant to join their team.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a one-to-one basis with pupils who have Autism and communication needs, providing consistent, individualised support to help them access learning, develop their confidence and make progress both academically and socially.

The successful candidate will work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team to understand each child’s individual needs and provide the appropriate support throughout the school day.

Your Responsibilities

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide dedicated one-to-one support to pupils with Autism and communication needs.
  • Support pupils to access and engage with their learning within the mainstream classroom.
  • Adapt activities and learning approaches to meet individual needs.
  • Support the development of communication, social interaction and independence skills.
  • Use appropriate strategies to encourage positive behaviour and engagement.
  • Build a strong, trusting relationship with the pupil you are supporting.
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and other support staff.
  • Follow individual support plans and contribute to monitoring pupil progress.
  • Provide encouragement and reassurance to help pupils develop confidence.
  • Support pupils during lessons, transitions, break times and other aspects of the school day.
  • Create a calm, structured and inclusive environment where the pupil feels safe and supported.

What We’re Looking For

The school is looking for someone who:

  • Has previous experience working with children or young people with SEN.
  • Ideally has experience supporting children with Autism and/or communication needs.
  • Understands the importance of adapting communication and learning approaches to meet individual needs.
  • Is patient, calm, nurturing and resilient.
  • Can build a strong and positive relationship with a child on a one-to-one basis.
  • Is confident supporting pupils with their emotional, social and educational development.
  • Can work effectively as part of a wider school team.
  • Is reliable and committed to a full-time, long-term position.
  • Has a genuine passion for helping children with additional needs achieve their potential.

Experience within a mainstream primary school, specialist setting, resourced provision, nursery, care or support environment would be beneficial.
