As Project Director at Amey Consulting, you will lead complex rail and light rail design programmes from concept to handover. You’ll guide multidisciplinary teams, aligning delivery with client outcomes and business strategy while upholding safety and quality. You’ll shape high‑performance project culture and drive improvements across technical, bidding, and programme functions, supporting work-winning and client relationships. This is a senior, strategically oriented role with a strong focus on leadership, governance, and delivering high-value infrastructure solutions.

Responsibilities
- Overall accountability for delivery of rail design programmes aligned to client outcomes and business strategy
- Lead multidisciplinary teams to achieve project and programme outcomes
- Foster a high-performing, safe, collaborative, and continuously improving project culture
- Act as project management subject matter expert, guiding PM teams, operational leaders, clients and suppliers
- Oversee preparation and checking of PM information to deliver commissions within quality, cost and programme constraints
- Own the commercial success of projects within the portfolio
- Engage with client and supplier reps up to director level; present proposals
- Identify and sponsor opportunities for PM initiatives and bid development
- Assume people management responsibilities when required
- Provide strategic leadership across Technical, Bidding and Programme functions to support bid win and delivery
- Build and maintain strong client relationships and foster a collaborative delivery environment
- Mobilise high-performing technical teams to develop innovative, high-quality solutions for framework tenders
- Lead bid preparation and general work-winning activities; act as bid director
- Lead line management where required
Key requirements
- Proven track record delivering large-scale rail or light rail infrastructure projects in design or programme leadership
- Experience managing multi-disciplinary design teams in complex, regulated environments
- Strong commercial awareness with NEC or similar contract frameworks
- Experience working with major UK rail clients or equivalent organisations
- Excellent stakeholder management and senior-level communication skills
- Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject
- Fellowship of the Association for Project Management (APM) or to be gained within six months
- Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) status with APM
- Deep expertise in project management theory applied to novel situations
- Knowledge and experience of the project management field and ability to manage others
- Experience with project management software and tools; ability to vet and approve new tools
- Strong ability to identify opportunities for project scope variations
- Excellent knowledge of suppliers and services, maintained through regular contact
