BI Developer (SQL)
Belfast | Hybrid | £40,000-£45,000
I’m working with an established organisation in Belfast that is looking to add an experienced SQL Developer to its team.
This is a role for someone who genuinely enjoys working with SQL and data. SQL will be at the centre of what you do, so we’re looking for someone who has used it extensively in a commercial environment rather than simply having had occasional exposure to it.
You’ll be working with existing databases, investigating data, developing and amending SQL code and helping solve problems where the answer is not always immediately obvious.
The Role
You’ll take ownership of SQL development across a range of business-critical systems and datasets.
A big part of the role will involve understanding existing SQL, working out how data fits together and developing your own queries and solutions from scratch.
You’ll also be expected to question the output you are getting. It’s not simply about writing a query that runs successfully, but understanding whether the result makes sense, validating it and investigating anything that does not look right.
Day to day, you can expect to:
- Write, maintain and improve complex SQL queries
- Develop SQL solutions from scratch as well as work with existing code
- Work across large and sometimes complicated databases and datasets
- Investigate data issues, inconsistencies and unexpected results
- Validate and sense-check query outputs to ensure the information produced is accurate
- Work with joins, CTEs, subqueries, aggregations, window functions, CASE statements and temporary tables
- Debug and optimise existing SQL
- Understand relationships between multiple tables and data sources
- Work independently to break down data problems and identify practical solutions
- Communicate your findings clearly to both technical and non-technical colleagues
What We’re Looking For
The most important thing for this role is strong, hands-on SQL experience.
You should be comfortable talking through the SQL you have written recently, the type of databases and datasets you have worked with and how you approach solving problems when the data is unclear or messy.
We’d particularly like to speak with people who can demonstrate:
- Strong commercial experience working with SQL
- Confidence writing their own SQL rather than only running pre-written queries
- Experience modifying, debugging and improving existing SQL
- An ability to work with complex or imperfect datasets
- A logical approach to analysing and solving problems
- Good attention to detail and a habit of validating your own work
- Curiosity when investigating data and an ability to work things out independently
- Clear communication skills and the ability to explain your approach and reasoning
You don’t need to know every piece of SQL terminology off by heart. What matters more is that you have genuinely used SQL, understand what you are doing and can demonstrate how you approach real data problems.
Why Consider It?
This is a good opportunity for someone who wants a role where SQL is genuinely the core skill rather than one technology among many.
You’ll have the opportunity to take ownership of your work, deal with interesting data challenges and join a team where there is plenty of scope to develop further.
Salary: £40,000-£45,000
