Job overview


The role will require colleagues to provide care for those with more minor presentations, use appropriate urgent care tests, assess patients that may or may not require secondary care referral and to instigate initial management for these patients when required.


Community urgent care covers the Urgent Treatment Centre at Newton Abbot and satellite minor injuries units, and therefore the role is not site specific.


Main duties of the job


You will be a source of clinical advice /guidance for multi -professional colleagues.


The role will coordinate the flow of the UTC throughout the shift, liaising with the Emergency department and with management/operational colleagues.


You will ensure safe and effective handover of care for patients within the UTC.


The role will contribute to clinical governance processes.


You will provide clinical supervision to allied health professionals/junior colleagues.


You will demonstrate that you are a dynamic and assertive clinical leader, focussed on driving high standards of patient care and experience.


The Community urgent care offer in Torbay and South Devon consists of

There are minor injuries units at Dawlish and Totnes which are supported by Practitioners.


The UTC at Newton Abbot is a busy environment, that supports the local population and sees a wide variety of patients of all ages with minor injuries and illnesses. The average attendance is 105 attendances per day.


The service runs on booked appointments with provision for walk-in attendances.


A GP clinical lead is in post; alongside an Advanced Clinical Practice Lead They provide clinical support to a multidisciplinary team of practitioners. The team provide care across the Community urgent care footprint, using Newton Abbot UTC as a base.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities


Communication and working relationship


Work collaboratively with colleagues across the multidisciplinary team.


Communicate effectively with patients, carers and healthcare professionals.


Recognise and respond appropriately to patients requiring alternative methods of communication.


Contribute positively to a supportive and inclusive working environment.


Analytical and judgement


Assess, diagnose and manage patients presenting with undifferentiated and undiagnosed conditions.


Provide appropriate treatment, advice, counselling and health education to patients.


Participate in clinical audit and quality improvement projects


Responsibility for patient and client care


Work autonomously to deliver appropriate care within local and national management protocols.


Be a source of knowledge and reference for practitioners to access.


Maintain accurate, contemporaneous and appropriate consultation records.


Prescribe safely and effectively in line with local and national prescribing guidance


Responsibility for supervision, leadership and management


  • Provide expertise and knowledge to practitioners and MDT colleagues within scope of practice.
  • Ensure flow is maintained across the unit.
  • Ensure capacity issues are managed and/or escalated.
