About the Role
We’re looking for a hands-on Software Development Team Leader to lead and develop a team of software engineers, developers, and testers while remaining closely involved in technical delivery. You’ll help translate customer and business needs into robust software solutions and ensure the team has the direction, capability, tools, and support required to deliver them successfully.
You’ll work with the Engineering Leadership Team, Project Managers, Product Owners, System Engineers, and other stakeholders to balance immediate delivery priorities with the longer‑term software roadmap. You’ll also take ownership of software development methods, toolsets, and configuration management, promoting quality, continuous improvement, and dependable delivery.
Your key responsibilities will include:
People Leadership & Capability
- Line manage direct reports, including regular 1:1s, objective setting, performance reviews, appraisals, coaching, and support for wellbeing and development.
- Build and motivate an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing team in which people are supported to do their best work.
- Identify skills, training, and personal development needs, ensuring the team’s capability can meet future business needs and deliver the software roadmap.
- Allocate selected software resources effectively, resolving priorities and resource conflicts in collaboration with the Engineering Leadership Team and Project Managers.
Design, Architecture & Hands-on Technical Delivery
- Maintain a strong hands-on technical contribution, designing, developing, and maintaining complex software systems using established and emerging technologies within an Agile delivery environment.
- Lead system and feature design discussions, contributing to architectural decisions and guiding technical approaches across the team.
- Review and refine user stories, acceptance criteria, and technical designs to ensure feasibility, clarity, testability, and alignment with architectural direction.
- Implement high-quality technical solutions and contribute to their evaluation, optimisation, and continuous improvement.
- Provide technical coaching through pair programming, code reviews, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing.
Delivery Planning & Stakeholder Management
- Coordinate software team activities to balance short-term tactical priorities with commercial commitments and strategic objectives.
- Support Project Managers with resource forecasts and engineering project plans, helping to identify dependencies, resolve constraints, and maintain predictable delivery.
- Provide clear, accurate, and timely updates on software delivery status, risks, dependencies, and priorities to the Engineering Leadership Team and key stakeholders.
- Support Agile delivery through effective planning, refinement, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives, helping teams deliver outcomes on time and to the required quality.
- Lead or support customer discussions and technical reviews, strengthening the link between customer needs and delivered software solutions.
- Contribute to the preparation and review of bids, estimates, and technical proposals.
Engineering Strategy, Methods & Continuous Improvement
- Support the definition and delivery of the strategic Software Development Roadmap, translating priorities into practical team plans.
- Own and continuously improve software development methods, processes, toolsets, and Software Configuration Management practices.
- Evaluate, select, and champion appropriate technologies, frameworks, environments, and design patterns to meet product and organisational needs.
- Develop and maintain systems, tools, and processes that improve the software development lifecycle, code quality, automation, observability, and delivery efficiency.
- Promote a continuous improvement culture, ensuring opportunities are identified, prioritised, implemented, and reviewed for effectiveness.
- Identify complex technical issues, analyse root causes, and implement robust, timely solutions that support project and release commitments.
- Assess technical risks associated with design and implementation decisions and recommend proportionate mitigation strategies.
- Ensure software meets the security, performance, safety, quality, and compliance standards expected in industrial and safety-critical environments.
- Produce and maintain clear technical documentation, design justifications, and records of key risks, trade-offs, and decisions.
- Maintain a strong customer focus, ensuring solutions meet user needs, business objectives, specifications, time expectations, and agreed quality standards.
Communication, Collaboration & Professional Influence
- Collaborate closely with Product Owners, Testers, System Engineers, Project Managers, and other stakeholders to achieve aligned and predictable delivery.
- Communicate technical proposals, architectural options, delivery constraints, and design conclusions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Facilitate team discussions, technical workshops, and cross-functional collaboration, promoting respectful and effective working relationships.
- Influence technical direction across the engineering organisation and promote alignment with engineering best practice and strategic goals.
Professional Development & Ethical Practice
- Maintain and record Continuing Professional Development to strengthen technical expertise and leadership capability.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, tooling, Agile engineering practices, and relevant industry developments.
- Ensure design and implementation decisions consider safe systems of work, sustainability, and ethical software engineering practice.
About you
You’re an experienced software engineer and people leader who combines sound technical judgement with a practical, supportive approach to team leadership. You take pride in building high-quality, well‑designed systems and understand the responsibility that comes with delivering software used in industrial and safety-critical environments.
You’re comfortable setting direction, organising work, making considered decisions, and supporting the development of others. You communicate clearly, collaborate effectively across disciplines, and can explain technical concepts, risks, and trade-offs to stakeholders at all levels.
You value maintainability, dependable delivery, and continuous improvement. Experience with industrial systems, embedded environments, condition monitoring, Agile delivery, Software Configuration Management, or tools such as Atlassian Cloud would be beneficial, but not essential. What matters most is your ability to lead people and technical delivery while maintaining a credible hands‑on contribution.
We believe in equal opportunities
We believe in teamwork. No matter where you’re from or how you identify, we’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
We’re looking for hardworking, passionate individuals to join our team. When you come on board, we’ll provide the support and opportunities you need to unlock your potential and do your best work.
We’re committed to ensuring an accessible and comfortable experience for everyone. If there’s anything we can do to make your application process or working environment more accommodating, please let us know in your application or by reaching out directly. We’ll be more than happy to help.
