Software Engineer – Recurring Payin

Overview

In this role you will design and build backend services that power Wise’s Direct Debit and Payin platform, enabling automated funding and pre-authorizations for partners. You’ll work with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable APIs, robust payment routing, and high-volume data processing. You will help secure financial data and maintain reliability for millions of users across web and mobile. This is a chance to shape how Wise moves money for people and businesses at scale.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services in Java/Kotlin with Spring Boot on AWS
• Build and maintain RESTful APIs serving millions of customers
• Develop and optimize card pay-in flows powering large-scale payments
• Design and implement database schemas and SQL queries for high-volume data (PostgreSQL)
• Build event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka for asynchronous processing
• Develop and maintain a payment orchestration system routing payments across providers
• Write automated tests (unit, integration, end-to-end)
• Conduct code reviews and ensure security and engineering standards
• Participate in on-call rotations to handle production incidents
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, analysts, and engineers on cross-functional projects
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, scalability issues, and technical debt
• Ensure security best practices and compliance with financial regulations

Key requirements

• Java/Kotlin proficiency
• Spring Boot framework experience
• Cloud deployment on AWS
• RESTful API development
• PostgreSQL database design and SQL optimization
• Experience with Apache Kafka or similar event-driven architectures
• Payment systems or fintech domain experience is a plus
• Automated testing (unit/integration/e2e) and code reviews
• On-call production support experience
• Security-conscious development for financial data
