Overview

In this role you will lead the City of Toronto Traffic Management Centre operations, ensuring 24/7 continuity, efficient traffic flow, and robust incident response. You will work with city departments, emergency services, and contractors to deliver high-quality traffic management services. You will shape operational strategies, mentor a multi-disciplinary team, and drive continuous improvement through data-driven reviews. Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day TMC operations ensuring 24/7 functionality
  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Coordinate responses to major incidents, events, and emergencies
  • Communicate effectively with emergency services and maintenance teams
  • Conduct post-incident reviews and implement improvements
  • Manage and mentor TMC supervisors, operators, and staff
  • Develop training programs to boost team performance
  • Perform performance evaluations and address staffing issues
  • Serve as primary liaison for internal/external stakeholders
  • Represent the TMC in meetings and public forums
  • Foster relationships with partners to support collaborative traffic management
  • Maintain operation and maintenance of ATMS, CCTV, and VMS
  • Identify technology upgrade opportunities and lead implementations
  • Monitor system performance and resolve technical issues
  • Analyze traffic data to identify trends and inform decisions
  • Prepare reports on TMC activities, incidents, and KPIs
  • Contribute to long-term traffic management plans for Toronto
  • Drive initiatives to improve TMC efficiency and effectiveness
  • Stay informed on industry trends and best practices

Key requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in a relevant discipline + 6 years experience in traffic operations or transportation planning
  • or Relevant Diploma + 8 years of relevant experience
  • or Highschool + 10 years of relevant experience
  • Preferred: 7+ years in traffic operations or transportation planning
  • Proven experience managing teams in high-pressure environments
  • Demonstrated success in incident management and traffic operations
  • Bachelor’s degree in transportation engineering, urban planning, or related discipline (preferred)
  • In-depth understanding of traffic management systems, tools, and technologies
  • Familiarity with City of Toronto transportation network and policies (preferred)
  • Incident management training and first aid certification (desirable)
