Research Associate in Mass-spectrometry-based holobiont exposomics
Job number MED05999 Faculties Faculty of Medicine Departments Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction Salary or Salary range £50,733 – £59,484 per annum Location/campus Hammersmith Campus – Hybrid Contract type work pattern Full time – Fixed term Posting End Date 13 Oct 2026
About the role
We are looking to fill a postdoctoral research associate position in computational holometabolomics for the Leverhulme Centre for the Holobiont, a world-leading research Centre led by Imperial focused on understanding the linkages between hosts and their microbiomes across the tree of life. The Centre was founded in 2022 following the award of £10 million from the Leverhulme Trust. It now has active research projects across many research groups, including on insects, plants, and amphibians.
This is a cross-faculty Centre between the Faculties of Natural Sciences, Medicine and Engineering. Several other institutions are also involved in ongoing research activities, including the Institute of Zoology, the Natural History Museum, and the Sanger Centre, the European Bioinformatics Institute and several others. The Leverhulme Centre for the Holobiont aims to build a supportive research environment that fosters collaboration and trains a new generation of holobiont researchers.
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Research Associate to join Imperial’s Leverhulme Centre for the Holobiont to oversee the Centre’s exposomics and environmental metabolomics activities.
What you would be doing
This position, funded by the Leverhulme Centre, offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of cutting-edge mass spectrometry-based strategies to increase metabolome and exposome coverage to better understand metabolome architecture, similarity, diversity and functionality in various holobionts across the tree of life.
The post holder will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and will be responsible for developing and implementing innovative metabolomics and exposomics workflows “from mass spectrometer to paper” for high-throughput high-resolution accurate mass spectrometry-based metabolomic data to investigate the role of microbial metabolites in holobionts, to efficiently characterise holobionts in conjunction with taxonomical, genetic and metagenomic data.
What we are looking for
PhD in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, metabolomics or similar subject.
What we can offer you
- Access to world-class research facilities at Imperial College London.
- Hybrid working options to support work-life balance.
- The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution
