Job overview

We wish to recruit an enthusiastic and creative Clinical Psychologist to join the Older Adult Community Team in Newcastle. This post will largely be based at St Nicholas Hospital in Gosforth. The post is a 0.6wte permanent post at Band 7. The person appointed will be working within the Newcastle Older Adult Community Treatment Team and Memory Service across Newcastle and parts of North Tyneside. We are a vibrant multi-disciplinary team consisting of mental health nurses, OTs, psychiatrists, mental health wellbeing practitioners, physiotherapists and support workers. The psychology team offers a range of therapeutic interventions, including CAT, CBT, DBT, EMDR, family therapy, formulation and neuropsychological assessment, to support older people and their families with both functional and cognitive difficulties.

Main duties of the job

As part of the Community Treatment Team the person appointed will be providing psychological assessment, formulation and treatment for older adult clients and families experiencing a variety of complex mental health difficulties. The post holder will also work into the Memory Service, provide neuropsychological assessments for patients suspected of presenting with a dementia. In addition, there will be opportunities to support the provision of supervision and scaffolding to members of the Community Treatment Team.

Experience of working psychologically with older people with complexity and co-morbid difficulties would be an advantage. The post will provide opportunities for developing skills in teaching/training, clinical supervision, research, and involvement in service development.

The Psychology team is friendly and supportive, and embedded within a thriving network of clinicians providing services to Older Adults in Newcastle. There is a very active local BPS Faculty of the Psychology for Older People (FPoP) network. Additionally, we have close links with the Newcastle and Teesside Doctorate training courses and regularly have Trainees on placement as well as contributing to the course teaching.

Person specification

Education and Qualification

  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and Neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society and the HCPC
  • HCPC registered practitioner psychologist
  • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, and inpatient settings
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course with presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity, including severe and enduring mental health problems, psychosis and personality disorder. This includes maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the possibility of physical abuse
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex multivariable data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
  • Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health

Skills and Competencies

  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management
  • Skills in evidence based psychological interventions.
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinical sensitive information to clients, their family, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups

Role/Team specific requirements

  • Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multimedia materials for presentations within public, professional and academic settings
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive behaviour
  • Experience of working within a multicultural framework
