Health Care Assistant- Mental Health Urgent Assessment Centre
An exiting opportunity has arisen for experienced Healthcare Assistants to join the new Mental Health Urgent Assessment Centre (MHUAC) team based at the Radbourne unit which is due to open in Autumn 2026.
The new 24/7 unit provides an alternative assessment environment to traditional emergency departments and allows patients to be assessed in a therapeutic environment which meets their mental health needs.
The post holder will work alongside co-located assessment teams covering the south county and city areas including the mental health liaison team, crisis teams and mental health helpline.
Please note this role will be primarily out of hours working, including, late shifts, nights, weekends and bank holidays. Applicants will be required to work the full range of shifts across this pattern.
Main duties of the job
Healthcare assistants in the MHUAC will work alongside registered practitioners supporting with booking patients into the assessment centre and recording information on the trust electronic patient record, Supporting patients who present distressed on arrival.
Applicants will also support with observing patients in the waiting area and assessment rooms, supporting patients to access facilities in the assessment centre inclusive of supporting nutritional and hydration needs whilst in the unit. Applicants will also be required to complete physical observations on patients within the MHUAC
You will work alongside registered staff to support patients during their assessment and support with onward referrals. Applicants may also be required to work across the wider urgent assessment pathways where operational demands necessitate.

Job responsibilities
- supporting patients to orientate to the MHUAC
- ensuring up to date documentation on EPR
- providing access to toilets, assessment rooms and MHUAC
- observation of patients in areas across the MHUAC
- supporting patients to meet and manage ADLS
- supporting registered clinicians where required
- liaising with internal and external teams to meet the needs of patients and the service
- escalating concerns where appropriate
- completing physical observations on arrival
Person Specification
Qualifications
- NVQ L3 in Health and Social Care or relevant field or care certificate issued by an organisation based on the standards set by Health Education England, Skills for Care and Skills for Health or equivalent NHS experience to the work area
- Able to demonstrate ability to complete aspects of training as identified, as necessary
Skills
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written
- Be able to work as a part of a large multi-disciplinary team
- Be able to accept direction from senior staff
- Be able to work under own initiative, being aware of own limitations
- Be able to work flexibly throughout a 24-hour rota
- To have a positive attitude towards training and learning new skills and enhancing knowledge
- To be able to demonstrate self motivation
- To possess a positive attitude towards the care of those with Mental Health Problems
Knowledge
- Previous experience of working in caring services
- Experience of working with adults with mental health needs
- Experience of providing care in the NHS
