Job description
Do you want your financial expertise to make a real difference to the lives of children and young people?
Can you turn complex financial data into meaningful insights that support vital commissioning decisions?
Join us to help ensure every pound is spent effectively, delivering value for money while achieving the best outcomes for children and families.
What will your day look like?
As a Children’s Commissioning Finance Officer, no two days are the same. You’ll play a key role in supporting Children’s Services by providing expert financial management, monitoring budgets, forecasting expenditure, and producing reports that inform important decision‑making.
You’ll analyse financial information and trends, helping managers understand risks, opportunities and spending patterns. You’ll work closely with colleagues across Children’s Services, finance teams and external providers to ensure financial processes are followed and statutory responsibilities are met.
A significant part of the role involves overseeing financial processes linked to children’s residential, fostering, supported accommodation and education places, ensuring payments are accurate, timely and represent value for money. You’ll also contribute to reports for senior leaders and support continuous improvement across commissioning services.
Who are we looking for?
We’re looking for a motivated and detail‑oriented finance professional who can provide high‑quality financial support within Children’s Services.
You’ll be someone who is confident working with financial data, able to manage competing priorities, and committed to delivering excellent customer service. You’ll enjoy building positive working relationships and using your financial expertise to support effective decision‑making.
You’ll bring:
- Experience of financial transactions, budget monitoring, forecasting and management reporting.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify trends, risks and opportunities from financial information.
- Advanced Excel skills and confidence using financial and payment systems.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to a range of audiences.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to work accurately under pressure whilst meeting deadlines.
- Experience of developing effective working relationships with colleagues, providers and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of children’s social care and education funding and commissioning arrangements, or the ability to develop this expertise.
- A minimum Level 5 National Qualifications and Credit Framework qualification relevant to finance, or equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.
Most importantly, you’ll be someone who shares our commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for children, young people and families through effective financial management and collaborative working.
Why join us?
This is an opportunity to use your financial expertise in a role that has a real impact on children’s lives and outcomes. You’ll join a supportive team committed to delivering high‑quality commissioning services across Children’s Services.
Working with us means you’ll:
- Contribute to services that support children, young people and families.
- Influence key financial decisions through detailed analysis and expert advice.
- Work alongside dedicated professionals across Children’s Services and partner organisations.
- Develop your skills and knowledge through continuous professional development.
- Be part of an organisation driven by its values of valuing people, honesty, continuous improvement, openness, commitment and integrity.
Make a difference through finance. Help us deliver the best possible outcomes for children and young people.
