What It’s Like to Work Here

At IWM, we’re driven by a shared purpose: helping people understand the impact of conflict and the experiences of those affected by it. At IWM Duxford, this mission comes to life through one of the world’s most significant historic aviation sites, where visitors can experience aviation history through flying aircraft, air shows, exhibitions and collections.

You’ll join a dedicated Airfield Services team responsible for the safe, professional and efficient operation of a busy licensed aerodrome. Working alongside aviation professionals, emergency services, pilots and operational teams, you’ll play a key role in supporting daily flying activities and special events while helping to preserve and showcase aviation heritage for future generations.

Why This Role Matters

The Flight Information Service Officer (FISO) plays a vital role in maintaining the safety, efficiency and reputation of IWM Duxford’s airfield. Through clear communication, sound judgement and adherence to aviation regulations, you’ll help ensure the safe movement of aircraft and the effective coordination of airfield operations.

Your work will directly support flying activities, historic aircraft operations, visitor experiences, air shows and special events. By delivering high operational standards and working collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders, you’ll help Duxford remain a world-renowned centre for aviation heritage, learning and public engagement.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide a safe, efficient and professional Flight Information Service in accordance with CAA regulations, local procedures and aerodrome instructions.
  • Support the safe day-to-day operation of the airfield through effective communication with pilots, operators and other airfield users.
  • Conduct routine airfield inspections, identify hazards and ensure issues are reported and addressed promptly.
  • Carry out meteorological observations and assist with the inspection and upkeep of meteorological equipment.
  • Support wildlife hazard management activities, including the operation of bird-scaring equipment.
  • Undertake basic flight planning activities, maintain operational records and ensure information is accurate and up to date.
  • Originate NOTAMs and assist with maintaining aerodrome publications and operational documentation.
  • Support air shows, events and flying displays, helping ensure activities are delivered safely and efficiently.
  • Liaise with Rescue and Fire Fighting Service colleagues, customs and immigration officials, contractors and operational partners as required.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to pilots, visitors, operators and other stakeholders while representing IWM professionally at all times.

What We’re Looking For

  • A Radio Operator Competence Certificate (ROCC).
  • A current full UK driving licence.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade C/Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the confidence to communicate clearly and accurately.
  • The ability to build positive working relationships and collaborate effectively with a wide range of people.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work accurately in a safety-critical environment.
  • A professional, customer-focused approach and a commitment to high operational standards.
  • An interest in aviation, airfield operations or aviation heritage.

How You’ll Work

You’ll work on-site at IWM Duxford as part of the Airfield Services team, operating on a rostered annualised-hours pattern. The role combines operational airfield duties, administration and customer service, offering a varied and dynamic working environment where no two days are quite the same.

Working closely with colleagues across airfield operations, emergency services, events, facilities and visitor-facing teams, you’ll help deliver safe and efficient flying operations while supporting some of the UK’s most celebrated aviation events and experiences.
