Overview
In this role you will manage complex planning applications from pre-application to determination and appeals, contributing to Durham’s sustainable growth. You will handle major developments across housing, commercial, infrastructure, renewable energy, and minerals and waste, and may lead large projects while mentoring junior officers. The position sits in the Development Management team, working with stakeholders to shape thriving communities. You will help deliver high-quality development that aligns with the council’s growth ambitions.

Responsibilities
- Manage complex planning applications from pre-application advice through to determination and appeals
- Work on major developments across housing, commercial, infrastructure, renewable energy, and minerals and waste
- Lead significant projects and mentor/junior officers to build capability
- Engage with developers, stakeholders and the public to secure high-quality outcomes
- Support the council’s growth ambitions and sustainable development agenda
Key requirements
- Degree in Town Planning (G11) or equivalent
- Professional qualification (RTPI) (G12)
- Proven experience in planning and development management
- Strong understanding of planning policies and procedures
