Overview

As part of GDFT, you will design and optimize PlayStation’s real-time game streaming tech. You’ll work on low-latency video paths across capture, encoding, transport and presentation, improving visual quality and reducing end-to-end latency. You’ll collaborate with researchers and engineers to prototype new approaches and validate their impact. This role sits at the intersection of product engineering and R&D, offering opportunities to shape streaming on PlayStation platforms.

Pay / Benefits

  • flexible and hybrid work
  • professional development and conference attendance
  • internal hackathons
  • cross-regional collaborative projects
  • travel a few times per year
  • supportive work environment

Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize and maintain low-level C/C++ components in the game streaming stack
  • Reduce end-to-end streaming latency across frame capture, buffering, encoding, transport and presentation
  • Tune hardware encoders and apply low-latency encoding techniques
  • Analyze media pipelines to identify buffering, memory copies and synchronization delays
  • Use instrumentation to measure behavior and quantify performance changes
  • Debug issues across user-space, system services and daemons
  • Prototype and evaluate new approaches for quality, latency and bandwidth efficiency
  • Collaborate with codec developers and researchers on rate control, FEC and emerging media tech
  • Contribute findings to design discussions and production solutions
  • Collaborate across teams to validate streaming tech within platform software
  • Attend in-person workshops or team events; travel may be required

Key requirements

  • Proficiency in C and C++
  • Experience developing native, performance-sensitive software
  • Experience with real-time video, media pipelines, codecs or embedded multimedia systems
  • Understanding of video compression concepts and codecs (AVC, HEVC, AV1)
  • Knowledge of low-latency video encoding concepts (GOP, rate control, quantisation)
  • Strong debugging, profiling and performance-analysis skills
  • Ability to investigate complex technical problems with instrumentation
  • Comfort working in unfamiliar parts of a large system
  • Experimental mindset with prototyping and evaluation
  • Ability to discuss findings with senior engineers and decide on production paths
