What you’ll be doing
Reporting to the Head of Architecture, you’ll be a hands-on Senior Network Engineer for a focused 3-month engagement. The role has two parts: working alongside the Head of Architecture and our customers to make sure they get a reliable experience from our platform, diagnosing connectivity issues end to end wherever they sit, and helping to build a proof of concept using Amazon MSK. It combines classic network engineering, such as packet-level diagnostics, routing and ISP knowledge, with modern DevOps practice including automation and infrastructure as code.
You’ll be involved in:
-
Working with customers, and their IT and telephony providers, to diagnose connectivity and performance issues end to end, from the customer’s local network and ISP through to our cloud platform.
-
Diagnosing complex connectivity, latency and packet-loss issues using Wireshark, tcpdump and related tools, tracing problems from the application layer down to the ISP link.
-
Pinpointing where an issue sits and driving it to resolution, whether that means giving a customer clear, evidence-based guidance.
-
Analysing routing, DNS, load balancing, VPN and CDN behaviour to understand how traffic reaches our platform.
-
Helping to build an Amazon MSK proof of concept, covering cluster set-up, private connectivity, security and client access, using Infrastructure as Code.
-
Presenting findings and recommendations from the proof of concept to inform next steps.
-
Working with application, platform and security teams to share findings and agree improvements.
-
Contributing a network perspective to architecture decisions and design reviews.
-
Documenting diagnostic approaches, findings and runbooks, and handing over knowledge so they last beyond the contract.
Who we’re looking for
At Reapit, we prioritise hiring individuals who share our values and possess the right attitudes and behaviours for success. Whilst some of the listed requirements may be important, don’t worry if you don’t meet all of them, we’d still like to hear from you.
-
Senior-level Network or Network Reliability Engineer with deep packet-level troubleshooting experience (Wireshark, tcpdump, tshark).
-
Strong understanding of TCP/IP fundamentals and the OSI model, able to isolate issues to the right layer quickly.
-
Practical production experience with routing (including BGP), DNS, load balancers, VPNs and CDN behaviour.
-
Experience diagnosing issues across networks you don’t control, such as customer offices, ISPs and VoIP/telephony systems.
-
Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka or Amazon MSK, ideally including designing or building a new cluster.
-
Solid AWS networking knowledge (VPCs, subnets, route tables, Transit Gateway, security groups, site-to-site VPN), with exposure to Azure networking a plus.
-
Hands-on Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible or equivalent) and Scripting (Python, Bash or similar).
-
A track record of delivering clear, measurable outcomes within a fixed-term contract, able to get up to speed quickly and work autonomously.
-
Confident in customer-facing situations, able to lead technical calls with customers and their IT teams and explain complex issues in plain language.
-
Able to communicate findings clearly to engineers and non-technical stakeholders, both internal and external.

Within 3 months:
