The Emergency Department at Southmead Hospital sees between 300and 350 patients per day, with a wide variety of conditions predominantly from the North of Bristol but from the region as part of the Trusts tertiary services.

Please note the JD for this role does nothave RCEM approval due to the differences with the SPA split within the job plan.

Applicants should have a CCT or be within twelve months of achieving this at the date of interview or be listed on the GMC’s specialist register to be eligible for application for a substantive post. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work with the established 29 Consultants and 2 Specialists in a rota including evening, weekend and overnight sessions as part of their job plan. The successful applicant will be expected to take a role in our new (co-located) minor injuries unit, as well as working with the other Consultants on the shop floor, enabling the Department to meet National Service Frameworks and Government targets.

The appointee will be contractually accountable to the Bristol Foundation NHS Trust for the provision of services. The appointee will be managerially responsible to the Chief Executive through the Divisional Director. All Consultants are required to undergo an annual appraisal carried out in accordance with the Trust policy. Consultants are also required to take an active and co-operative approach to their job planning, which will be reviewed on an annual basis by their clinical Director.

Person Specification

Training & Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 2 yrs of NHS experience
  • Minimum of 8 years postgraduate experience including three years as a Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
  • Training in diagnosis and treatment of Emergency Medicine conditions.

Desirable

  • Advanced resuscitation skills, experience of observation Medicine

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
  • Ability to provide independent consultant-level clinical decision making.
  • Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty

Desirable

  • Broad range of IT skills

Clinical Governance and Audit

Essential

  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
  • Experience in audit project and written up Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
  • Knowledge of political context within which we operate.

Desirable

  • Completion of a general management course or programme

Research

Essential

  • Knowledge of the principles involved in research
  • Evidence of involvement in clinical research

Desirable

  • Additional academic experience and qualifications e.g. PhD
  • Evidence of publication of peer reviewed academic papers
  • Proven track record in research leadership or delivery.

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • CCT in Emergency Medicine or within 6 months of completion and eligible for entry to the GMC Specialist Register at the time of appointment. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.
  • Full registration with the GMC

Desirable

  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).

Teaching and Training

Essential

  • Experience of teaching medical undergraduates & postgraduates
  • Proven teaching ability
  • Experience of supervising trainees.
  • Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team

Desirable

  • Formal teaching/ education qualification
  • Educational Supervisor training completed.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and educational leadership

Management & Leadership

Essential

  • Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it
  • Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
  • Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant
  • Ability to practice independently as a consultant
  • Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership
  • Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks
