Overview

In this role you will shape the core backend and platform strategy for Navan’s next-generation AI-assisted travel experience. You will own scalable, fault-tolerant microservices and collaborate across product, data and platform teams to deliver enterprise-grade solutions. You’ll drive architectural trade-offs, performance, and reliability while mentoring engineers and raising the bar for quality. This is an opportunity to influence a high-velocity travel platform at scale, with a focus on user-centric, AI-enabled experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Architect core backend systems and scalable microservices for high-traffic travel and expense data
  • Build and maintain micro front ends and user interfaces
  • Lead cross-functional technical initiatives from concept to production
  • Optimize APIs, event-driven architectures, and data pipelines for low latency and high availability
  • Collaborate with product, data, and platform teams to translate requirements into enterprise-grade solutions
  • Mentor engineers, conduct architecture reviews, and promote strong operational ownership

Key requirements

  • 6+ years of software engineering experience in highly scalable, distributed production systems
  • Proficiency in backend stacks such as Java, TypeScript/Node.js, Python, Go (or VM-based language)
  • Exposure to frontend tech like React or Angular
  • Experience designing microservices, APIs, event-driven workflows, and distributed systems
  • Track record of driving technical vision and multi-team architecture leadership
  • Strong observability skills with SLOs/SLIs, production debugging, and reliability of Tier 1 services
  • Product mindset balancing delivery with long-term technical health
  • Bonus: experience in travel platforms, fintech, payments, or complex financial ledgers
