Overview

In this in-house role you will provide expert legal advice and representation on safeguarding children matters within the Directorate of Children’s Services. You will support social workers in child protection work, care proceedings, adoption (including international aspects), and related legal processes. You will collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure timely, compliant service delivery. This position offers variety within a high‑impact public service focused on safeguarding vulnerable children and contributing to an ambitious regeneration agenda.

Responsibilities

  • Advise and represent Social Workers in child protection functions
  • Attend legal planning meetings and advise on care proceedings and adoption (including international elements)
  • Handle pre-action judicial reviews and proceedings with parents and external lawyers
  • Interpret and apply legislation related to the council’s safeguarding duties and provide guidance accordingly
  • Liaise with Social Workers and others to monitor progress and maintain service delivery

Key requirements

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive or equivalent
  • Experience across all aspects of safeguarding children law
  • Strong communication and liaison with social care teams
  • Collaborative and responsive teamwork
  • Judgment and advisory mindset under pressure
  • Safeguarding/child protection law
  • Care proceedings and adoption law (including international elements)
  • Pre-action procedures and Judicial Reviews
