Principal Engineers operatewithin defined domains and provide leadership to our SolutionArchitects. With deep technical expertise, they act as TechnicalLeads, shaping future‑ready frameworks that support our strategicobjectives. They set, evolve, and uphold engineering standardsacross the team, continually raising the bar for quality,innovation, and delivery.

As a senior role,Principal Engineers play a critical part in connecting DataEngineering with wider Technology and Architecture functions. Theywork collaboratively across teams to ensure alignment, consistency,and shared direction, enabling us to deliver our data strategyeffectively and at scale.

What you’ll do: 

  • TechnicalMentorship: Act as the technical lead for all engineersworking cross-functionally in an agile environment; act as atop-notch coder and expert in the domain, capable of deep divinginto details of components and features, uplifting capability andshaping engineering maturity across the Domain.
  • ArchitecturePartnership: Define and guide the technical architecturefor complex, high impact data products and platforms. ManageSolution Architects and act as the natural bridge between DataEngineering and Data Architecture as well as colleagues in widerTechnology.
  • Standards Setting: Establishengineering and architectural patterns, coding standards, and bestpractices adopted across multiple squads.
  • Design &Innovation: Translate sophisticated business andtechnical requirements into scalable, cloud native data solutions.Able to create and build frameworks to support CI/CD pipelines andfuture capability; drive adoption of new tools, technologies, andengineering approaches that support a cloud-agnostic, AI-readyfuture platform.
  • Assurance & Excellence: Embedrigorous validation, profiling, reconciliation, and automatedtesting into all engineering work; lead monitoring, observability,and performance optimisation to ensure resilient, reliable dataproducts.
  • Strategic Influence: Partner witharchitects, product leaders, and senior stakeholders to shaperoadmaps and platform direction. Work collaboratively with yourPrincipal Engineer peers to ensure consistent and joined-upapproaches to our biggest priorities and challenges. Communicatingin both deeply technical and plain and simple terms.

Whatyou’ll bring:  

Essential criteria:  

  • TechnicalMastery: Deep expertise in cloud data engineering,distributed processing, and enterprise-scale data architecture.Excellent GCP/AWS/Azure, Python and/or Node JS 8+ knowledge, andCI/CD experience (ideally with Jenkins).
  • AdvancedSQL: Master-level proficiency in SQL (ideally BigQuery),with strong optimisation and performance-tuning skills. Experiencefollowing coding standards and performing peer code reviews.
  • Data Modelling& Insight: Strong capability in designing intuitive,scalable data models and semantic layers aligned to businessmeaning; skilled in advanced data profiling, anomaly detection, andstatistical reasoning to ensure data integrity.
  • Collaboration: Able to influencesenior stakeholders, simplify complex concepts, and build strongcross-functional relationships.
  • Technical Leadership: Expert in dataquality frameworks, governance standards, and secure handling ofsensitive data; connects engineering choices to long-term platformstrategy, organisational goals, and future scalability.
  • Understanding: Uses deep businesscontext within the specific Domain to shape proactive, value-drivenengineering decisions; also equipped with first-class communicationskills, able to grasp very complex data principles and processes,and decipher them in order to walk non-experts through them andgain support.

Desirablecriteria:

  • AI &Agentic Systems: Recent experience designing, building,or integrating AI-powered and agentic solutions into enterpriseplatforms, with an understanding of autonomous workflows, LLM-basedapplications, orchestration frameworks, and the engineeringconsiderations required to operate them securely, reliably, and atscale.

How you’ll work: 

We’ve adopted a hybrid working approach to givemore flexibility on where and how we work. The hybrid workingexpectations for this role are 2 days in the office per week.
