Yorkshire Ambulance Service is seeking a highly motivated and capable Health and Safety Manager to play a key role in supporting the safety, health and wellbeing of our workforce. As a senior member of the Health and Safety Team, you will provide expert advice, guidance and assurance to managers and leaders across the Trust, supporting compliance with health and safety legislation and contributing to the continuous improvement of our safety culture. Working closely with operational services, corporate departments and external partners, you will help identify risks, investigate incidents, develop practical solutions and ensure learning translates into meaningful improvements.
We are looking for a credible and experienced health and safety professional who combines strong technical expertise with excellent interpersonal and influencing skills. The successful candidate will have experience of managing health and safety within a complex organisation, using data, assurance and learning to drive improvement. They will be confident advising leaders, supporting managers through challenging situations and balancing regulatory requirements with operational realities. Above all, they will be committed to promoting a positive, proactive and learning-focused approach to safety.
Main duties of the job
The Health and Safety Manager is a specialist lead responsible for supporting the delivery of health and safety activities across Yorkshire Ambulance Service. Reporting to the Head of Health and Safety, the postholder will work with operational managers, clinical leaders, and corporate teams to ensure that health and safety risks are effectively identified, managed and reduced, while supporting compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing specialist health and safety advice and support to managers, leaders and staff across the Trust.
- Supporting the development, implementation and review of health and safety policies, procedures, standards and improvement initiatives.
- Leading and supporting investigations into accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions, ensuring learning is identified and shared.
- Undertaking audits, inspections, risk assessments and assurance reviews to monitor compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Analysing incident, risk and assurance information to identify trends, emerging risks and areas requiring action.
- Supporting the management of health and safety governance arrangements, risk registers, action plans and assurance reporting.
- Working collaboratively with operational services, Estates, Fleet, Occupational Health, staff-side representatives and external agencies to improve workplace safety.
- Delivering training, education and coaching to increase organisational capability and strengthen understanding of health and safety responsibilities.
- Contributing to organisational programmes relating to staff safety, violence prevention, risk management, governance, and quality improvement.
- Supporting the Trust in maintaining compliance with health and safety legislation, NHS standards, Care Quality Commission expectations and Health and Safety Executive requirements.

Experience and Work Achievements
