On 1 April 2026, NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) and NHS Education for Scotland (NES) became one national organisation, focused on continuity today and a stronger, more connected service for tomorrow. We support staff with education and training, provide the tools and data that improve services, and run vital national functions such as procurement, logistics and blood, tissue and cell services.
The Post:An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Support worker to join the Patient Services Laboratories team within SNBTS based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
The Healthcare Support Worker provides essential technical and administrative support to Biomedical Scientists and Practitioners, contributing to the delivery of specialist transfusion and laboratory services. Duties will include but are not limited to receiving and preparing samples, maintaining accurate laboratory records, operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, monitoring stock levels, handling biological specimens safely and supporting the issue and management of blood products under supervision.
The postholder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering a high-quality service to hospitals and healthcare professionals across the North of Scotland. This is a varied role requiring attention to detail, adherence to standard operating procedures and a commitment to quality, safety and patient care.
The Candidate:We are looking for a motivated individual with excellent communication skills and a strong attention to detail.
You should have the ability to work effectively as part of a team, prioritise your workload and remain organised when working in a busy environment. The successful candidate will be willing to undertake laboratory-based training, develop new skills and comply with all mandatory training and Healthcare Support Worker standards.
Experience using computer systems and previous laboratory experience or knowledge of health and safety procedures would be advantageous, however training will be provided.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme/Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who has lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.
Location and Working Pattern:Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen Blood Transfusion Centre.
Monday to Friday, 36 hours per week. Flexible working requests will be considered in line with service requirements. Participation in shift working and out of hours service provision may be required in line with service needs. Part Time hours will also be considered for this post.
