This is more than a traditional Support Worker role.
We are looking for a Buddy / Support Worker to build a genuine, long-term relationship with an outgoing, sociable and fun-loving 18-year-old young man with cerebral palsy.
This is a fantastic opportunity for somebody who wants to move away from traditional agency-style support and work consistently with one individual – getting to know him properly, sharing his interests and helping him live a busy, active and fulfilling life.
And he certainly likes to keep busy!
Football is a huge part of his life. He’s a massive Aston Villa supporter and regularly travels around the country – and abroad – to watch them play.
Away from football, he enjoys gaming, concerts, festivals, sporting events, nights out with friends, weekends away and holidays.
We’re therefore looking for somebody who doesn’t just want to turn up for a shift.
We want someone who can become a consistent and trusted part of his life.
What will you be doing?
Your role will combine companionship with practical and personal support, helping him enjoy as much independence as possible while ensuring his safety and wellbeing.
You’ll support him with:
Building confidence and independence
Personal care and daily routines
Getting out into the community
Football matches and other sporting events
Concerts, festivals and social activities
Nights out and spending time with friends
Gaming and his other interests
Driving his wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV)
Longer journeys around the UK
Weekends away and holidays in the UK and abroad
This is very much a one-to-one role, and building a strong, trusting relationship will be just as important as the practical support you provide.
Who are we looking for?
Personality and attitude are incredibly important.
You’ll ideally be someone who is:
Friendly, positive and easy to get along with
Fun and outgoing with a good sense of humour
Calm and patient
Reliable and genuinely looking for something long-term
Energetic and happy to get involved
Comfortable providing personal care
Confident supporting someone with a physical disability
Interested in football, sport and/or gaming
Happy travelling and accompanying him on trips and holidays
You’ll also need a full, clean UK driving licence and must be a confident driver. This includes motorway driving and being comfortable completing journeys of up to approximately three hours when required.
Previous experience within care, support work or supporting young people with disabilities would be beneficial, but we’re much more interested in finding the right person with the right attitude and values.
Full training and ongoing support will be provided.
Working Hours
The role is part-time and currently includes:
Tuesday afternoon/evening: 7–8 hoursWednesday afternoon/evening: 7–8 hoursAlternate Friday afternoon/evening: 7–9 hoursAlternate Saturday/Sunday: 12 hours
Why consider this role?
If you’re looking for a standard support role where you complete your shift and go home, this probably isn’t it.
But if you want to work consistently with one young person, build a genuine relationship and support him through an exciting stage of his life, this could be an incredibly rewarding opportunity.
You’ll get to support someone to do the things he genuinely loves – whether that’s heading to Villa Park, travelling to an away game, going to a concert, spending time with friends or getting on a plane for another adventure. xwwtmva
