Overview

In this role you will contribute to shaping transport networks across the South West by delivering strategic and microsimulation modelling to support infrastructure investment and development planning. You will work with cross-functional teams to produce robust evidence, reports and client deliverables, helping clients make informed, low-carbon decisions. The role offers opportunities to specialise in strategic modelling or microsimulation while contributing to a growing national transport modelling capability. Responsibilities

  • Develop, calibrate, validate and apply strategic transport models (PTV VISUM)
  • Build and deliver microsimulation models (VISSIM, Aimsun, Paramics)
  • Conduct transport forecasting, scenario testing and option appraisal
  • Interpret model outputs to provide evidence-based client recommendations
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations and client deliverables
  • Support business cases, transport strategies and investment studies
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior team members
  • Contribute to project management, including programme delivery, fee proposals and client engagement
  • Stay updated with industry guidance, modelling best practice and digital technologies
  • Tailor the role to candidate experience in strategic modelling, microsimulation or digital transport planning

Key requirements

  • Experience in transport modelling with development and application of PTV VISUM models
  • Strong knowledge of modelling principles: calibration, validation, forecasting
  • Experience with microsimulation tools (VISSIM, Aimsun, Paramics)
  • Experience delivering modelling studies for local authorities, developers, National Highways or similar clients
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and numerical skills
  • Excellent report-writing and communication skills
  • Experience with Excel and GIS; knowledge of Python, Power BI or data analytics advantageous
  • Ability to work independently and with multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience supporting junior colleagues and contributing to project delivery
  • Membership or progress towards CIHT or CILT
