Overview
As a Principal Flood Risk Modeller within the Water Environment Department, you will steer complex flood risk assessments and mitigation schemes across the UK, guiding a multidisciplinary team and shaping modelling strategies. You’ll ensure high-quality flood risk deliverables, support clients, and mentor colleagues while aligning with the firm’s water resources and resilience objectives. This role offers leadership on projects, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and opportunities to advance professional accreditation. Responsibilities
- Provide technical direction to modelling team and ensure quality of flood risk deliverables
- Influence modelling approach and decision-making for flood risk mitigation measures
- Lead or co-manage projects, coordinate resources, budgets, and milestones
- Manage clients and track project quality, programme, and financials
- Mentor team members and supervise deliverables
- Support multi-disciplinary collaboration on EIAs, risk assessments, and mitigation schemes
Key requirements
- Significant experience in hydraulic modelling across diverse projects
- Strong understanding of UK hydrology and open channel hydraulics
- Experience with standard hydraulic modelling packages (Innovyze ICM, Flood Modeller Pro, TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, SRH2D)
- Proven ability to lead and manage projects, meet deliverables and QA/QC standards
- Knowledge of economic appraisals (MCM, BST)
- Experience in optioneering and schematic design
- Soft skills for delivering public and statutory consultations
- Knowledge of Flood Risk Assessment, Natural Flood Management and Sustainable Drainage techniques (desirable)
- Chartered status (C.Eng or C.WEM)
- MSc/MEng and/or PhD in hydrology, hydraulic modelling, water resources or related field
