Overview
In this role you will provide technical leadership for civil engineering across United Utilities, shaping water and wastewater infrastructure strategy. You will mentor engineers, set engineering standards, and collaborate with partners to deliver complex capital programmes. You’ll influence governance and engineering practice while raising the company’s profile in the wider engineering community. This is an opportunity to drive engineering excellence at scale within a FTSE 100 company and develop the next generation of engineers.

Responsibilities
- Provide civil engineering leadership and governance across the business.
- Lead teams of technical professionals and ensure high-quality outputs.
- Accountable for technical decision-making and engineering assurance.
- Support delivery of complex capital programmes and strategic projects.
- Provide expert advice across the full project lifecycle from concept to handover.
- Contribute to development and continuous improvement of engineering standards and procedures.
- Promote technical consistency and governance across functions.
- Act as Designer under CDM regulations and champion safe design principles.
- Develop relationships with universities, research institutions and industry organisations.
- Engage in industry forums, publish technical papers and collaborate on research.
Key requirements
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) with substantial post-chartership experience in senior roles.
- Proven track record leading complex engineering activities and influencing technical decisions.
- Strong leadership to influence engineering decisions across a large organisation.
- Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams in complex environments.
- Experience delivering capital projects and strategic programmes end-to-end.
- Excellent understanding of engineering governance, standards, policy and technical assurance.
- Strong knowledge of water, wastewater and sludge treatment processes and hydraulic design.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience producing technical reports, specifications and engineering standards.
