Job Description:

Location: South UK – ideally within reach of HertfordshireSalary: £38,000–£45,000 basic + performance-based commission (typically 10%, with significantly more achievable)Job type: Full-time, permanentWorking hours: Monday to Friday, flexible working hours with time off in lieu

The opportunityWe’re recruiting a Field Service Engineer for a world-renowned manufacturer of chromatography and spectroscopy instrumentation used by universities, research institutes and pharmaceutical, biotech and chemical laboratories.

Based from home and covering East Anglia and the South of England, you’ll take ownership of your territory, keeping customers’ analytical instruments running to specification while becoming a trusted technical partner to the laboratories you support.

This is much more than a pure service role. With a strong analytical and applications background, you’ll be able to discuss customers’ science and methods, build credibility with scientists and identify opportunities for service renewals and new hardware – with commission paid on the business you help win.

You’ll join a small, close-knit team of technically strong scientists and engineers. Full manufacturer training is provided in Italy and Germany, with a clear progression pathway into product specialist positions and higher-end technologies across the wider group.

What you’ll be doing

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on chromatography and spectroscopy systems.
  • Diagnose and repair faults on customer instruments across the Southern territory.
  • Install, commission and validate new analytical systems at customer sites.
  • Carry out Pre-Delivery Inspections (PDIs) and functional testing before equipment is shipped.
  • Provide on-site technical and applications support, including basic user training.
  • Complete RAMS, SOPs and service documentation in line with 21 CFR Part 11 and GMP/GLP requirements.
  • Identify opportunities for service contract renewals and new hardware sales.
  • Build long-term relationships with university, research and industry customers.
  • Maintain accurate CRM and installed-base records.
  • Work closely with the wider Field Service, sales and European technical teams.
  • Manage your own diary and territory, planning customer visits and service activity independently.

Equipment you’ll work with

  • HPLC / UHPLC systems
  • SFC (Supercritical Fluid Chromatography)
  • Circular Dichroism (CD) spectrometers
  • UV-Vis/NIR and fluorescence spectrometers
  • FTIR and Raman spectrometers
  • Polarimeters

What we’re looking for

  • We’re looking to speak with analytically-minded engineers and scientists who combine strong technical ability with commercial awareness – someone who can fix the instrument and talk the science.
  • A degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline is essential for applicants coming from a scientific background. For experienced Field Service Engineers, this is desirable rather than essential.
  • Field service experience working on chromatography, particularly HPLC, or spectroscopy instrumentation – alternatively, strong hands-on laboratory experience as an end user.
  • Good applications knowledge and the confidence to discuss customers’ science, analytical methods and applications.
  • Commercial awareness, with the ability to identify and support opportunities for service contracts and new equipment.
  • Experience working with RAMS, SOPs and regulated documentation, ideally within GMP, GLP or 21 CFR Part 11 environments.
  • A positive, flexible and self-motivated approach, with the ability to work independently across a large territory.
  • Strong communication and customer-facing skills, with the ability to build credibility with scientists and technical users.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Italian language skills would be a strong advantage.

Package and benefits

  • Basic salary: £38,000–£45,000, depending on experience
  • Performance-based commission: typically 10%, with significantly more achievable
  • Company car: estate or SUV
  • Fuel card / company credit card with all business travel expenses covered
  • 25 days’ annual leave, including 2 days at Christmas, plus Bank Holidays
  • Annual leave increases by 1 day per year up to 30 days
  • Flexible working hours with time off in lieu
  • Full manufacturer training in Italy and Germany
  • Home-based role with ownership of your own territory and diary
  • Minimal overnight travel, with only the occasional week requiring one night away
  • Opportunity to work with a broad range of chromatography and spectroscopy technologies
  • Small, close-knit and technically strong team
  • Clear pathway into product specialist roles and higher-end technologies
  • Opportunity to develop both your technical and commercial skills
  • Long-standing relationships with leading university, research and industrial customers
  • A long-term opportunity to build your career within a specialist analytical instrumentation business
